The Best Native Plants for Christchurch Gardens in 2026

New Zealand natives are having a moment. Across Christchurch, homeowners are moving away from high-maintenance exotic plantings and discovering what experienced gardeners have always known: native plants are harder, more beautiful and far more interesting than they're given credit for.

1. Griselinia littoralis (Broadleaf / Kapuka)

If there's one native plant we recommend more than any other in Christchurch, it's Griselinia.

Fast-growing, evergreen and incredibly wind-tolerant, it makes the perfect privacy hedge for Canterbury properties that face the nor'west. Its glossy apple-green leaves are beautiful year-round, and it responds great to trimming, meaning you can keep it as neat or as natural as you like. Plant it in autumn for best establishment.

2. Phormium tenax (New Zealand Flax / Harakeke)

Few plants make a statement quite like a well-placed Phormium.

Its bold, architectural form adds instant drama to garden beds, and it comes in a stunning range of varieties: from deep burgundy and bronze to lime green and striped. Phormium is virtually indestructible in Christchurch conditions, tolerating both wet and dry soils, and it's one of the best plants for attracting tūī into your garden.

3. Cyperus ustulatus (Toetoe)

Often confused with pampas grass (which is actually an invasive pest) toetoe is the native alternative that deserves far more attention than it gets.

Its graceful, arching golden plumes are genuinely spectacular in summer, and it's a key food source for native birds. Plant it as a feature specimen or alongside water features where it will absolutely thrive.

4. Coprosma (Mirror Bush)

The coprosma family is one of New Zealand's most versatile native genera, and in 2026 the coloured-leaf varieties are having a genuine moment in garden design.

From deep chocolate and amber to bright lime and variegated, coprosmas bring year-round colour without the fuss of flowering plants. They're drought tolerant once established, work beautifully as low hedging or ground cover, and grow happily in Christchurch's climate.

5. Libertia grandiflora (New Zealand Iris / Mikoikoi)

One of our personal favourites for shaded garden beds and woodland-style plantings.

Libertia forms elegant clumping tufts of fine green foliage with delicate white flowers in spring. It's the kind of plant that looks effortlessly considered without requiring much effort at all. It handles dry shade beautifully, making it perfect for those tricky spots under established trees.
